Bourbon 101: Types of Bourbon

Updated: Nov 18, 2020

An important point about Bourbon is the “mash”. This is its word for “blend” and refers to the precise quantity of corn, rye, wheat and malted barley that makes up each brand of Bourbon. While there’s a strict minimum ratio for corn grain content, there’s more elasticity for the remaining grains which means more varieties of Bourbons to explore!

There is also a wide range of ways of producing Bourbon, all of which result in different styles for different tastes. “Cask Strength Barrel Proof” Bourbon boasts a strong flavour and alcohol hit while “Single Barrel” Bourbon is as pure as it comes. Then there’s “Non-Chill Filtered” which means more flavour intensity – and the list of creativity goes on. Why not check out our “Bourbon 101” course to fine-tune which dram suits your taste?
